Glastonbury Abbey

This video shows the ruins of Glastonbury Abbey and Cathedral including the burial place of King Arthur and Queen Guinevere.  There is also the original Spanish mission which was the beginning of the abbey.  Harding, son of Ednoth the Staller, held land under the abbot of Glastonbury.  The video shows some of the surrounding farmland.  Harding is mentioned by name in the Domesday Book as being the tenet of the abbot of Glastonbury Abbey.  There was a controversy regarding the land.  It was missing a few years before the survey but had been restored by 1086 when the Domesday Book was compiled.

There are legends associated with the abbey.  One is that Mary Magdella, Mary the mother of Jesus, and Joseph of Arimathaea came here and that the church leaders were especially vicious toward Mary Magdella, drawing an ugly picture of her on the back wall of the mission showing her as a horrible monster.  The story goes on that she was also the wife of Jesus and that there are writings around on the walls to indicate this.  There is a story that the group came to a town in the south of Spain and made its way to Glastonbury Abbey.  This town in Spain holds a festival in their honor each year.  The legend continues from there with the belief that the earliest kings of France descended from Mary Magdella and Jesus.  I met a lady at the bus stop that told me this, and apparently she believed it to be true.  I wish I had had her to show me around the site because I didn’t see the writings and picture she was talking about.
